A prime location at the typical ski resort? That would be any place so close to the lift that one could essentially “ski in, ski out” their front door. Of course, that is assuming one couldn’t just stay on the ski lift for the night. In Courchevel, a group of four friends got the chance to live this ultimate ski dream: staying the night suspended in a cable car-turned-luxury apartment, 9,000 feet above the ground.

Our winner, Tommy from Manchester, brought his brother and two friends as his cohorts on the ultimate ski weekend in the sky. The foursome used to travel a lot growing up together as avid skiiers, but their careers had taken them to different cities on different schedules, and they hadn’t had the chance to hang out as much as they used to. Tommy, a talented ski freestyler, also had to give up his love of skiing due to a previous injury. But as Tommy proposed in his submission to the contest, this was their chance to get back on track in more ways than one.

The jovial crew kept spirits high when they arrived at Courchevel, though their travels didn’t go as planned. While two of the friends arrived to Geneva no problem, Tommy and his brother had issues with their flight leaving Manchester. Our team booked the next flight for the brothers to get to Geneva, arranging for a helicopter to swoop them up from there and take them straight to Courchevel. They arrived in ultimate VIP style—floating in from the sky and between the mountains in a helicopter to greet their friends on the ground. Their epic stay was just getting started.

Buzzing through the night on snowmobiles to make it to the station, the group arrived at their Airbnb cable car apartment. Once the doors slid open, there were no words spoken—just stunned silence. The cable car was a full-on luxury condo inside: floor-to-ceiling red curtains, fuzzy white rugs, a couch and coffee table in the living room with a cozy throw blanket and pillows—a perfect pad to hang out in before hitting the slopes. But of course, this was far from standard ski lodgings: through the four walls of windows, all they could see were pristine mountain tops, and a perfect unobstructed view of La Saulire, the highest point in Courchevel.

Tommy took in the views, picking out which sides of the mountain snow the crew would be carving out the next morning. “Amazing, isn’t it? Absolutely crazy,” he said to his friends.

To fuel up for their big day on the slopes, the group enjoyed a typical Savoie dinner… in the obviously atypical setting suspended over the valley. And in the morning, they took their breakfast on the very top of the mountain, under the sun and in the fresh snow before clipping into their skis to make those sacred first tracks. And not just any first tracks, as this was another level of untouched powder at the top of their mountain.

The guys spent the rest of their day owning the mountain and making memories as a group that would last a lifetime. As they all agreed, it was hard to say goodbye to their cable car-away-from-home. A stunning adventure like this would be hard to repeat, though of course, now they had the motivation to try.
