Introducing Airbnb Neighborhoods

About Vivek Wagle

Airbnb travelers face a unique challenge. Around the world, our hosts offer spaces in a wide array of diverse communities, each with its local flavor. We call these communities neighborhoods.

Our users have told us that location is the single most important criterion when choosing a place to stay. And with such overwhelming choice, travelers often have trouble planning their accommodations.

But imagine if someone created a tool that matched you with the neighborhood that’s right for your trip.

Today, we’re proud to introduce Airbnb Neighborhoods—the definitive guide to neighborhood experiences around the world.

How very interesting; all you need now is a collaborative, bottom up advertising sales tool that is for that neighborhood and *sold* by that neighborhood and suddenly you are sustaining a whole new range of commercial opportunities within that same community.best etc

I live in Southwest DC which is a wonderful neighborhood which fits into many of the categories they allow users to search yet they don’t even have Southwest listed. In fact, Southwest is the closest neighborhood to the National Mall AND most museums are located in the neighborhood so one would think they would definitely cover that area…. Since they’ve launched the feature I’ve received very few inquires compared to before the launch. Essentially they are taking business away from me rather than promoting my property. I’ve contacted them on this but they just say they’ll "eventually" list my neighborhood meanwhile I’m losing guests. Not cool.

Update: I just received word from airbnb that they listed my neighborhood! I truly hope other hosts who have had the same concerns have similar luck. Cheers!

OK, the day that neighborhoods was launched, my SF neighborhood – Bayview- was listed with all the rest. However, not 24-hours later, the page’s link from the main locations/sanfrancisco/ page was removed, as was all the content from the Bayview neighborhood page. Surrounding neighborhoods, including Portola, Dogpatch, and Visitacion Valley, all still have their pages. So what gives? I’ve tried contacting folks at AirBnB about this, but have heard nothing back. Why after a month has the page not been restored?

My listing too has suffered since the launch. Not so much as a result of posting neighborhoods, though the search does favor the large cities and our room is in a suburb surrounding San Francisco, but because the removed the search by price features! Even hotels.com has that. Our bookings are now down over 70%. We have begun posting our room on other sites such as roomarama. If airbnb can not keep their search accurate they will loose hosts as well as guests. They have made their search a nightmare to use, especially from the guests perspective. Not cool airbnb, not cool!
